Ruchir Desai was a brilliant student. I taught Income Tax for his batch in their final year. I remember, in the class he would be sitting right in the front. At the end of every chapter, I would get the class to solve problems. Every time I would read out a problem, Ruchir would write it down in his notes and would even begin solving it right away. And by the time I completed dictating the problem, he would invariably have the answer ready. And most often the correct answer. At times he used to falter slightly but would immediately realize his mistake and would make a note of it. He was extraordinarily fast in learning as well as in answering questions posed.
